Athens intends to strengthen the land border with Turkey, from which thousands of migrants tried to break into Greek territory last March, RG reported.

According to Kathimerini, the Greek authorities decided to build a new fence in addition to the existing barriers near Maritsa, which separates the two countries.

It is also planned to send an additional several hundred military personnel and police officers to the Greek-Turkish border due to the high risk of new attempts by illegal immigrants to enter Hellas.

According to the Greek defense minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, strengthening and expanding the border fence will help prevent a sudden influx of refugees into the EU.

The length of barriers on the Greek side of the border is 12 kilometers now and Athens will increase it at least three times, Greek media reported.
