'Gatherings blamed for increasing coronavirus cases in UAE'

Abu Dhabi - 'Resumption of economic activities does not mean that the Covid-19 pandemic has ended'

Covid-19 cases are increasing in the UAE because of get-togethers being hosted by families and bachelors, a top official has said.
"We must all avoid gatherings. Residents should avoid going to crowded places," said Dr Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, official spokesperson of the UAE Government, during a virtual briefing on Wednesday.
Resumption of economic activities does not mean that the Covid-19 pandemic has ended, she reiterated.
"Everyone is responsible for their safety and that of their family members and the community. We should continue adhering to the precautionary  measures including physical distancing, wearing face masks when going out and general hygiene in homes and workplaces."
This came as the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention announced 883 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infected persons to 31,969.
More awareness needed
Dr Al Shamsi said the next phase "we are heading to" requires more community awareness about taking precautions and individual responsibility.?
"Resuming business is very important for the nation. But reopening economic activities doesn't mean the precautionary measures have been lifted. The measures put in place to contain the spread of the virus are here to stay," she said.

Robust health sector?
She noted that the UAE health sector has always been "ready and strong". ?To combat the spread of the virus, the country has a system which operates around the clock, including the national sterilisation programme; expansion of the scope of Covid-19 testing; and home screening programme for people of determination, among others.
