PM Karins: Government aims to end state of emergency in Latvia in June

BC, Riga, 20.05.2020.Print version
The government's aim is to end the state of emergency, which has been declared in Latvia over the Covid-19 pandemic, in June, leaving at the same tome some restrictions in place, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said today in an interview to Latvian Television., referred LETA.

As reported, in an effort to contain the spread of Covid-19, Latvia declared a state of emergency from March 13 to June 9. A number of restrictions, primarily preventing people from gathering in large groups, have been introduced during the state of emergency.

The prime minister indicated that the government's aim is to call the state of emergency off after this date. The plan is to replace the state of emergency with a special temporary law that would give the government additional powers so that it can swiftly respond to new situations arising from the spread of Covid-19 and protect public health.

However, the government will continue to stress that basic restrictions and requirements like increased hygiene standards and physical distancing remain in force as long as Covid-19 is not completely eradicated but is only contained.
