CO2 Free: Challenger Bank bunq Plants Trees with Green Card Launch

Netherlands based challenger bank bunq has announced a new program where its customers may become “CO2 free” in under two years simply by using the bunq Green Card.

bunq SuperGreen is a program that for each €100 spent on any bunq card the company will plant a single tree.

The challenger bank says it aims to plant at least half a million trees before the end of the year. bunq did not disclose how it will document the actual planting of these trees but the promotional program may resonate with certain users as the company said that 81% of their users backed the program.

The trees planted will be in partnership with Eden Reforestation. The specific trees are predicted to capture 308kg CO2 over their 25 average lifespan.

bunq founder and CEO Ali Niknam said they are the only bank in the world that enables you to become “completely CO2 free in less than 2 years.”

Starting today, bunq Premium, as well as bunq Business users, can upgrade their subscription to bunq Premium SuperGreen and bunq Business SuperGreen and start planting trees for every card payment they make.

Inside the app, the user may track the number of trees they have planted.

Founded in 2012, bunq’s latest publicly available number of user deposits stands at €433,410,761 based on the deposits in December 2019. bunq is currently available in 30 European markets: the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Norway and Iceland.
