Australia stands 86th in the world when it comes to the cost of an Mbps of broadband data, according to a study by vouchercloud, a company that belongs to the global e-commerce marketplace Groupon. The data showed that Australians pay US$1.15 (A$1.86) per Mbps.

Australia's speed ranking put it at 63rd while its average price for a connection was 101st out of the 159 countries who figured in the list.

Romania had the lowest prices per Mbps at US$0.05 (A$0.08) while Yemen came in last at US$811.40 per Mbps. (The complete list can be seen here.)

A statement from vouchercloud said it had used user-submitted broadband speeds from Speedtest and broadband price averages from cable.co.uk to get the average cost of an Mbps.

This is the second time vouchercloud has issued these statistics, the first being in March 2019. At that time, Australia was ranked 66th, with the average cost per Mbps being A$2.26.

Lithuania stood second in the rankings (US$0.11 per Mbps), followed by Russia (US$0.12), Hungary (US$0.13) and Ukraine (US$0.13).

France had the highest rank of any Western nations, ranking 10th with an average cost of US$0.20 per Mbps. An Asian country, Thailand, stood higher at 8th, with an average cost of US$0.18 per Mbps, while South Korea came in 11th (US$0.21).

While the presence of Singapore and Hong Kong in the top 20 was not surprising, lesser-known countries like Moldova, Kazakhstan and Vietnam also figured in this group.

The UK was way down at 53rd in the rankings while the US stood 33rd.

New Zealand stood 48th when it came to the cost of an Mbps; its speed rank was 21st and its average price for a plan placed it at 113.

vouchercloud chief technology officer Geoff Parkhurst commented: "As we become evermore connected, it’s clear that the Internet is a utility, not a luxury.

"This research suggests that, on a global level, the quality of Internet varies hugely. Whilst Eastern Europe and East Asia provide their citizens with fast Internet at inexpensive prices, plenty of other countries are failing to do so. Western economies need to take note to avoid being left behind!"
