‘Hawaii Five-0’ star Katrina Law says filming finale was ‘super-emotional’

When former “Arrow” star Katrina Law signed on to join “Hawaii Five-0” at the beginning of Season 10, she figured there was a 50-50 chance it would be the show’s last hurrah.

“It was kind of a magical number to go out on,” says Law, 34. Turns out that CBS decided the series had run its course, announcing last week that “Hawaii Five-0” will end on April 4. Two days after the show wrapped, Law — who plays Quinn Liu, a former staff sergeant with Army Criminal Investigation Command — says filming the finale was “super-emotional. There were a lot of tears, tears out of joy. We got to say our proper goodbyes.”

The remaining episodes will shine a light on seldom seen areas of Liu’s private life. In Friday’s episode (8 p.m.), a telephone call from her former stepdaughter, Olivia (Siena Agudong), takes Quinn away from her duties with the 5-0 task force. When Quinn arrives at the house where Olivia lives with her father (Bart Johnson), it’s clear that the teenager has been left alone for days and Quinn flies into a rage. “You get to see the fierce love and devotion Quinn has for the girl,” Law says.

Lucky for her, Quinn takes into her confidence a member of the force (though he’s on probation): Adam Noshimuri (Ian Anthony Dale), whose contacts help her track down the wayward dad. “Quinn has had a past and Adam would be able to keep her secret,” she says. “She made a really wise decision. Their friendship bond has been forged in steel. And working with Ian was so solid and supportive.”

Law left LA behind to set up shop in Hawaii with her husband Keith Andreen and their daughter to take the “Five-0” gig. “Moving to Hawaii was not a hard ask. It’s a legit paradise,” she says. “There’s beauty all around. Even the supermarket is gorgeous. The love people have for this land is awe-inspiring.” She had just finished playing bad-ass Nyssa Al Ghul on The CW’s “Arrow,” her best-known role to date and one that has her fans taking the time to compile her fight-scene highlights in affectionate YouTube videos.

A childhood spent taking dance, karate and gymnastics in the Cherry Hill, NJ area helped Law rise to the physical challenges of the role, whose exact nature was kept under wraps. “As far as I knew, I was going to be a female fighter,” she says. “When we booked [the job], they still didn’t tell me what role it was. Everything was very secretive.”

During her time on “Arrow,” Law worked with two stunt doubles, Atlin Mitchell and Tamiko Brownlee. “Whatever I couldn’t do, my stunt doubles did,” she says. “It depended on the fight. ‘Arrow’ had some long hours. As an actor and a human, you can’t do it for 15 hours and not get hurt, so you have to have a stunt double there. You can become friends with them from the time you get there.”

Law formed friendships with the “Hawaii Five-0” cast in her year on the series and offers a tease of the final episode. “Quinn’s love for [her stepdaughter] has been transferred to the ‘Five-0’ team and one of their own gets in trouble,” she says. “You see the entire team make sure this person is safe.

“It’s no-holds barred.”
