Environmental activist Greta Thunberg and 15 children from 13 countries are urging Prime Minister Erna Solberg to halt exploration and extraction of oil and gas.
“By increasing oil and gas production in the face of the climate crisis, Norway is violating the rights bestowed on every child in the world in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child,” they said in a letter to PM Solberg.
According to Dagsavisen, international law firm Hausfeld conveyed the message to the PM on UN Human Rights Day on behalf of Thunberg and the other children who come from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, India, the Marshall Islands, Nigeria, Palau, South Africa, Tunisia, Alaska and the United States.
“The climate crisis is here. Our house is burning now. The world is heading towards 3.2 degrees of warming,” emphasised the letter.
A copy of it was also sent to Minister of Climate and Environment Ola Elvestuen (V), Norway’s UN Ambassador Mona Juul and UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, David R. Boyd .
The Government of Canada has also received a similar letter. Like Norway, Canada wants to have an international leadership role in climate policy but at home, Canadians are planning more oil and gas recovery ahead.
“By increasing oil production and greenhouse gas emissions at a time when the world should be heading in the opposite direction, Canada and Norway are endangering the lives of children and violating their fundamental rights under international law,” said Michael D Hausfeld. founder and Chairman of the Hausfeld law firm, in a press release.
