However, the surrounding ocean usually keeps a lid on temperatures with cooling on shore breezes. This summer, though, the trade winds have been light and the ocean temperatures have been running 2 to 4 degrees above normal for the entire island chain which has resulted in the hottest summer ever for Hawaii. Warmer onshore winds have been going on for months. The sea surface temperature during August around Hawaii was the warmest in history.Since April Honolulu has had 30 record highs.Honolulu had its hottest July ever and tied for the hottest August.Kahului on Maui has had more than 60 record highs since April.Kahului had its hottest June and July ever and set an all-time high temperature with 97 degrees.Lihue on Maui tied its hottest June and set a record for the hottest July and August.Lihue set 21 record highs during August. That is a U.S. record for most record highs in one month.Through yesterday, Lihue has had 19 days in a row with record high temperatures.The trend is definitely continuing into September as Honolulu is averaging 4 degrees above normal for the month making this the hottest September ever there.Honolulu has had 4 record highs so far this month.Kahului has had 5 record highs this month.Lihue has had 10 record highs this month...
