Ottawa, May 26 (Petra)--Hundreds of Muslim students at the University of Ottawa gathered at Montpetit Hall Friday night for a joint iftar dinner, celebrating Ramadan by breaking their day-long fast at sundown.
The dinner was a joint effort of the Muslim Student Associations (MSA) of Ottawa and Carleton University. During Ramadan, the MSAs host meals for students on their respective campuses every night, but once during the holy month each year they come together for a shared event.
President of the Carleton MSA Ashad Khan said that the events are opportunities not only for the spiritual reflection that comes along with Ramadan, but also for new friendships and connections.
As charitable acts are also a part of Ramadan, funds were gathered at the event for Human Concern International, a Muslim Ottawa-based NGO that delivers aid to developing countries, he added.
