Despite January still being in full-swing, Debrecen International Airport has announced that more people have already traveled from the hub in eastern Hungary than in the entirety of January 2018, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

A winter view of the airport

Last January, a grand total of 24,072 passengers used the airport in Debrecen. This number was surpassed this year after a mere 22 days, indicating strong growth. The airport says that by the time the end of January rolls around, it expects a 35% increase in passenger numbers compared to the same month of last year.

The press release notes that a cooperation agreement with budget airline Wizz Air led to the arrival of a second base aircraft in December,  with scheduled flights to new destinations such as Doncaster Sheffield in England, Dortmund in Germany, Barcelona in Spain, and Basel in Switzerland. Starting March 31, the airline will also launch three new direct flights to Malta, Cyprus, and Mallorca.

The airport emphasizes that another of its most important routes is the five-times weekly service by Lufthansa between Debrecen and Munich, allowing passengers to travel to numerous destinations on the globe, a service popular among the staff of multinational companies in Debrecen.

In order to prepare for future passenger growth, Debrecen International has extended waiting room on both the air and land sides, upgraded water blocks, and doubled the number of gates. The hub has also acquired modern tools for passenger services and hired new employees.

The airport says that it regards modernization as very important, as it expects to reach 700,000 passengers in 2019, adding that the city of Debrecen regards the airport as a strategic partner.
