New office of the Diocesan Caritas inaugurated in VictoriaThis week, in the presence of the College of Parish Priests Gozo Bishop Mario Grech blessed and inaugurated the new offices of the Diocesan Caritas located in the annex of the Bishop’s Curia, in Victoria.

The ceremony was held on the occasion of the First World Day of the Poor launched by Pope Francis and which will be celebrated this Sunday.

The Bishop spoke about the commitment of the Church in helping the poor. He said, in the words of the Pope, “Let us welcome them as honoured guests at our table; they can be teachers who help us live the faith more consistently. With their trust and readiness to receive help, they show us in a quiet and often joyful way, how essential it is to live simply and to abandon ourselves to God’s providence.”

The Bishop expressed his appreciation to the Church in Gozo for its great generosity. He thanked the priests, who he said, with their pastoral guidance help to keep alight the flame of charity among the dear people entrusted to their spiritual needs.

Fr Michael Borg, Director of the Diocesan Caritas, outlined the various activities that are to be undertaken in Gozo.

He explained that with donations received, particularly from the Collection for Charity carried out in all churches during the Solemnity of Christ the King, he and his team endeavour to balance the needs of individuals and families who have financial difficulties.

Fr Michael said he is looking for a garage/storage area where he can store clothes and other items that are donated to give to the needy – he appealed to anyone willing to let Caritas use such an area.
