Angola pledges support for DRC refugees

Dundo, ANGOLA, June 21 - Angola government is committed to providing security to refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), based in the eastern province of Lunda Norte. ,

 

Angola’s pledge was reaffirmed Wednesday by the province's governor Ernesto Muangala, adding that the country  has created conditions for education and access to drinking water for DRC refugees.

 

Muangala was speaking at the Lóvua settlement, 80 kilometers from the provincial capital Dundo, during a ceremony that marked World Refugee Day, June 20.

 

He spoke of the improvement of security conditions to ensure adequate accommodation for refugees, as one of the government's concerns.

 

The governor recalled that the Angola, as a member of the African Union, the SADC and the Great Lakes Region, has played an important role in the search for solutions for stability in DRC.

 

The objective is to guarantee development and progress of that country, in view of ethnic conflicts in some bordering localities.

 

"We will continue to provide you with better security conditions, so that nothing bad will happen.  I call for compliance with the guidelines of the authorities in the country," he added.

 

In turn, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lunda Norte, Guy Rufin Guernas, said that the organisation needs to make some restraints, as well as work to attract more actors and resources, in order to provide better living conditions for the population.
