Road Scholar Caregiver Grant Total Climbs to 68; Not-For-Profit Organization Identifies Needed Respite for Baby Boomers and Beyond

/EINPresswire.com/ -- BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - November 16, 2016) - During National Family Caregivers Month, Road Scholar is pleased to encourage participation in its Caregiver Grant initiative that gives family caregivers age 50 and older the financial assistance to experience the not-for-profit organization's enriching learning adventures.

A recent National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine report underscores the heightened demands on caregivers that Road Scholar long ago identified. Since beginning its Caregiver Grant program in March of 2015, Road Scholar has afforded the much-needed respite of caring for an ill or disabled relative to 68 caregivers.

Among the grateful caregivers is Barb Hochgesang, 70, of Mission Viejo, Calif., who recently returned from an educational adventure, "Signature City Chicago: Your Kind of Town" (roadscholar.org/2818).

As the primary caregiver to her husband, Mike, who has Parkinson's disease, Barb was afforded a much-needed respite after she applied for, and received, the Caregiver Grant that allowed her to experience the celebrated museums, urbane cultural scene and revitalized lakefront of Chicago.

"This was my first respite since Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2002," Barb says. "The Road Scholar experience was a gift. As a former teacher, I appreciate the learning that went into each element of the program -- the Art Institute of Chicago, the architectural cruise -- I was able to immerse myself in the content and relax and refresh for a few days."

Not-for-profit Road Scholar has been dedicated to making the benefits of educational travel accessible to all older adults for more than 40 years. Road Scholar participants report that they benefit from the unique combination of study, travel, and friendship -- a combination that is especially helpful for caregivers experiencing feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression.

"Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Road Scholar is able to offer financial assistance," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar. "Scholarships and Caregiver Grants make our educational travel opportunities accessible to older adults who couldn't otherwise attend a Road Scholar program. We are pleased to provide fulfilling respite opportunities for caregivers, especially during National Family Caregiver Month."

This year, Road Scholar is also pleased to collaborate with Share the Care, an organization dedicated to providing support for individuals and their caregivers who are in need of support. In honor of National Family Caregiver Month, Road Scholar and Share the Care will offer 10 deserving caregivers -- both unpaid family caregivers and individuals who are part of a Share the Care team -- a unique respite opportunity to take part in a Road Scholar educational travel program.
