Air pollution alert

THE FUTURE CENTRE TRUST is raising a red flag about the quality of the air Barbadians are breathing, especially in high-traffic areas in Bridgetown.

And the non-governmental environmental agency wants an urgent meeting with the Minister of the Environment about the issue.

Director of advocacy, Kammie Holder, told NATION NEWS that a study done by students at McGill University this year had raised concerns about the particulate matter in the atmosphere, especially over areas like the bus terminals in The City; Eagle Hall, St Michael; and in Speightstown, St Peter.

Particulate matters are the solid and liquid particles like dust, dirt, soot or smoke, some of which were hazardous, and which were suspended in the air. They could have a negative impact on human health.

“We have been trying for the longest time to meet with the Minister of the Environment. The Future Centre Trust is still eagerly awaiting a meeting with [him],” Holder said. (HLE)
