Cuba beats Guatemala at U21 regional volleyball tourney

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 28 (acn) Cuba won its first match in the 2018 NORCECA U21 Men´s Continental Championship underway in Havana´s Sports City Coliseum from August 27 to September 2.

In its first match for Group A, the local side beat 3-0 (25-17, 25-18 and 25-13) Guatemala, according to the official website of the contest.
Today´s other games in this same group will be between the Dominican Republic and Guatemala, while Canada-Nicaragua and United States-Haiti will play in Poole B.
Last Monday, the DR defeated 3-0 (25-21, 25-21 and 25-18) Barbados, Canada won 3-0 (25-14, 25-17 and 25-18) over Haiti and USA beat 3-0 (25-23, 25-15 and 25-15) Nicaragua.
The best team of each Poole will advance directly to semifinals next Friday, while those ranking second and third will play the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The medals discussion will be on Saturday, with United States, Cuba and Canada, best three in that order in the previous edition of 2016, as main favorites.
The all-time medal table of the NORCECA U21 Men´s Continental Championship is led by Cuba with five titles in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2014, followed by Americans with three (2010, 2012 and 2016) and Canadians (1998 and 2002), respectively.
