Celebrate African music at Jersey City library's Greenville branch

You can celebrate the music of West Africa with a well-known percussionist as he performs in the Community Awareness Series tomorrow at the Jersey City Public Library's Greenville branch, 1841 Kennedy Blvd., at 1 p.m.

Abdou Mboup studied traditional drumming with his family, and became a key figure in the development of the Mbalax style, also known as Senegalese dance music.

Mboup was born to a family of oral historians and musicians in the small town of Kebemer, Senegal. He has toured and recorded in countires all over the world and has written original compositions for Jean Lue Ponty, Pharaoh Sanders, Tom Tom Club, and Randy Weston.

The performance will take place in the Barack Obama Auditorium. Admission is free. An adult or guardian must accompany children.
