Marc Flores is putting up all-star caliber numbers in the first half of the year for the Rieleros de Aguascalientes baseball team in the Mexican Leagues.
Through 32 games, the 6-foot-5 left-handed swinging King City High graduate is hitting .325 with six home runs and 22 runs batted in. Of his 25 hits, 13 have gone for extra bases this season. Flores has also scored 16 runs.
Originally drafted in the 30th round four years ago by the Chicago White Sox, Flores has spent the last three years playing independent baseball, hitting .272 in 2016 for Joilet with a career-high 12 homers.
An all-leaguer in football, basketball and baseball while at King City, Flores earned all-state honors in baseball at Hartnell College before earning a scholarship to the University of Hawaii.
Johnson-Toney Football Camp >> One of the longest running free football camps anywhere continues with the annual Ron Johnson-Anthony Toney Football Camp, slated for June 25-28 at 10 a.m. for ages 9-14 at Monterey Peninsula College.
Johnson and Toney, both of whom played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the mid 1980s, took over the camp from Herm Edwards five years ago, keeping a two-plus decade old tradition alive.
In addition, a second camp for ages 15-17 will be staged July 23-26 at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas.
Names that have come through the camp in the past include current Washington Redskins linebacker Mason Foster and Miami Dolphins quarterback David Fales.
Santora managing in Rookie League >> A decade-long professional baseball career in Italy has turned into a managing position for Jack Santora, who is managing the Los Angeles Angels Arizona Rookie League team.
Santora, who played in three World Baseball Classics for Team Italy, has guided the team to a 30-26 start, where the Angels sit four games behind the Giants rookie league team in the Arizona League’s East Division.
A Monterey High graduate, Santora was a shortstop at UCLA before being drafted in the 19th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1991, getting as high as Triple A,
Singh sets teen world records >> Monterey High graduate Kaci Singh set three teen world records at the 2018 World Association of Bencher and Deadlifters Championships at 114 pounds in Monterey.
Singh, who started as a catcher for the Toreadores softball team as a sophomore two years ago, bench-pressed 121 pounds, dead-lifted 286.5 pounds and push/pulled 380 pounds.
Russo dealing in Independent League >> Former Herald Baseball Player of the Year David Wayne Russo has made 13 appearances this season for the Southern Maryland baseball team in the Atlantic League.
The Monterey High graduate is 1-1 with 16 strikeouts in 19 innings of work. Russo, who pitched collegiately for San Jose State, has an 11-15 career record in the Independent League.
Five Hartnell runners scholarship bound >> Adam Alnazer became the latest Hartnell College track and field standout to land a scholarship, signing with Western Oregon University.
Alnazer, a Monterey High grad, was fifth in the state this past spring for the Panthers in the 800, clocking 1:55.52. He will go to Western Oregon with a career best of 1:54.50.
Distance ace Ricky Esqueda will run track and cross country next year at Western State in Gunnison, Colorado. Last fall the San Benito alum won the Northern California cross country title for Hartnell, and was fifth in the state in track in the 10,000 (31.42.00).
Oscar Mora is headed to CSU-East Bay in Hayward to run cross country and track. A two-time all conference runner for the Panthers in cross country, the former North County product qualified for the state meet this past spring in the 5,000.
Last month one-time North Salinas distance ace Christian Aldape signed with Humboldt State to run cross country and track. Aldape was a part of the Panthers Northern California men’s cross country title team, which finished fifth in the state.
In addition, two-time state long jump qualifier Haley Romero committed to Fresno Pacific. Last spring she was fifth in the state in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump for the Panthers.
Romero is sixth on the Panthers all-time list in the long jump with a mark of 18-9 3/4. She is also sixth all-time in the 100 hurdles (15.08).
Marina Sports Camps >> The Marina Recreation and Cultural Services will sport several summer camps, beginning with a skateboard camp June 18-22 for ages 6-14. A second skateboard camp will take place July 23-27 for ages 6-14.

Salinas Valley Half Marathon >> Registration for the Salinas Valley Half Marathon and inaugural 5K run in August is underway.
