Businesses in Hoboken are invited to apply for recognition in 2018 by completing the Green Business Pledge. This is an annual application process to track progress in sustainability efforts; each business must reapply annually for recognition. The pledge takes less than five minutes and should be completed by May 1.

In 2017, the Green Team recognized 23 local Hoboken Green Businesses. Simply Juiced was named as Hoboken's most sustainable business of 2017 for composting more than 57,000 lbs of food waste, diverting that waste from landfills and enriching organic farms.

The Green Team will review all submitted pledges and recommend businesses for recognition at the 7th annual Hoboken Green Fair on June 2. For more information about the Hoboken Green Business Recognition Program, visit hobokennj.gov/greenteam.

Police officer opens coffee bar

The Hudson Coffee Company, created by Hoboken Police Officer Justin DePascale,  is open for business and will have a ribbon-cutting  for the new coffee bar on May 4 at 1100 Maxwell Lane. That's the site of the former Hoboken Maxwell House coffee plant, the plant was the largest coffee processing plant in the world through the early 1990s.

While Hudson Coffee pays homage to Maxwell House, DePascale says that the coffee is very different from the mass-produced big brand. Ground locally and served as early as two days after being roasted for ultimate freshness, unique seasonal blends and single-origin, pour-over coffees are served alongside cold brews, fine teas, lattes, espresso, cappuccino, hot cocoa and more. Hudson Coffee will also serve a selection of pastries, croissants, cookies, muffins, and scones.

A ribbon cutting with Mayor Ravi Bhalla will be held at 10 a.m., May 4. DePascale will offer half-priced coffee and beverages during normal business hours, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., that day and will donate all the proceeds to the Hoboken Police Department's Police Benevolent Association (PBA). The PBA will use the donation to purchase safety equipment for Hoboken High School, where DePascale serves as School Resource Police Officer.

Plans are already underway for a second Hudson Coffee Company location in Jersey City at 70 Hudson St. Each coffee bar will employ about 15 people and DePascale aims to offer management opportunities for other police officers like himself as the business expands.
