Bovina Police Department asking for donations for narcotics dog

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Bovina Police Department is in need of a narcotics dog, and they're asking for your help.

The department has been without a K-9 for five to six years, but with the ongoing narcotics seizures, they say the time is now.

"Oh my gosh, its been difficult. I've been with the sheriff's office here in Palmer County and there were many times we needed a dog," said Bovina Police Chief Joe Orozco. "We'd have to call other agencies, for example Clovis, New Mexico, Dimmitt PD, and it took them about 30 to 40 minutes to respond."

The Bovina Police Department says they deals with a lot of narcotic related crimes, and the aid of a narcotics K-9 is much needed, especially when it comes to searching suspicious vehicles.

The city manager says a K-9 won't just help Bovina.

"I think it will deter people from carrying drugs in their vehicles, and with the amount of stops on I-40 it's probably bringing more traffic through 60 here," said Bovina City Manager Cesar Marquez.

The Bovina Police Department says their police K-9 will cost anywhere from $5,000 to $12,000.
