A Missouri man is in the Polk County Jail after police said he shot at a van along Interstate 80 near Altoona because he thought it was involved in an Amber Alert.

No one was hurt in the incident, but police said it was an example of what someone shouldn't do if they see something suspicious.

It started with a 911 call early Tuesday, Altoona police said.

Matthew Golden, 41, thought a van on I-80 was involved in an Amber Alert issued for two Iowa boys, investigators said.

But police said Golden decided just calling 911 wasn't enough.

Instead, he chose to take justice into his own hands, ramming his car into the van as it exited behind a gas station and then firing two shots.

But police said the van wasn't involved in the Amber Alert.

In fact, police weren't even looking for a van; they were looking for a silver car.

They said Golden put an innocent Florida driver, identified as T.C. Smith, who was just passing through, in danger.

"We can't find anything where this would have been justified," Altoona Police Chief Greg Stallman said.

Smith spoke exclusively with KCCI and said he thought he was going to die in that moment.

"I was feeling like this was my last breath," Smith said. "I can't even say goodbye to my family because I'm on the phone."

Smith was exiting the interstate to get gas when the unexpected happened.

"The next thing I know, when I'm about to get off, a car hits me from behind," Smith said. "I called 911 because I was kind of in shock, and then I heard something. It sounded like a rock.

"All of a sudden, I hear him cursing and hollering at me, 'I'm going to kill you if you get out of that van.' Next thing I know, I hear a gunshot. I knew I couldn't get out of the car, out of the van, because he's right there, and he'd have me dead.

"Next thing you know, there's like eight to 10 cop cars out there. They come out with arms ready. The guy was nuts. He actually stripped down to his underwear, had thrown the gun aside."

Smith said the suspect vehicle looks nothing like his car.

"That is nothing close to the same, except for the license plate being Illinois.
The cops' immediate response saved my life," Smith said. "It just makes me rethink life, totally."

Police arrested Golden on charges of assault, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and marijuana possession.

After this bizarre string of events, Stallman gave this advice.

"Your eyes are the best resource we have," he said. "You can call 911. You can tell us what you see, but we would prefer that you do not take action."

Authorities said Golden didn't appear to be intoxicated.

They found another gun in his car, and they're not sure if Golden owned the two guns legally. They said it's irrelevant, though, since he used them illegally.

A defense attorney for Golden has not been listed online.
