Mainer Ben True, 32, set a record Sunday, becoming the first American man to win the open division of the 2018 New York City Half Marathon.True ran the 13.1-mile course in a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 39 seconds, according to the New York Road Runners, which organizes the race.“Knowing that most of the field are marathoners, or at least have done the half many times before, I knew that I probably had a little bit better closing speed than them,” True said in a release. “My goal was just to hide for the majority of the race and then get dragged for 20K, and then hopefully that last I was able to use my speed to get around people. That was my strategy. Hang on for dear life.”The race said this was True's longest distance he has competed in.Last year, the North Yarmouth native won the Boston Athletic Association 5K road race Sunday and set a new American record.True’s time of 13 minutes 20 seconds broke his old record by nearly two seconds.He won the 2016 Beach 2 Beacon 10K.
