Girls Hockey: Warriors draw top-seeded Edina in state quarterfinals

The unseeded Brainerd/Little Falls Warriors will take on the top-seeded Edina Hornets in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The unseeded Brainerd/Little Falls Warriors will take on the top-seeded Edina Hornets in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Brainerd (23-5-0) is making its state tournament debut. The Warriors achieved that milestone with a 7-game winning streak, including a 2-1 victory over Roseau in triple overtime in the Section 8-2A championship game. During the regular season the Warriors lost to the Hornets 4-1 at the Edina Tournament Dec. 27.

Edina (25-2-1) is the defending 2A state champion. It had to defeat another champion to advance to state for the fourth consecutive season. The Hornets are riding an 11-game win streak, including a 4-2 victory over Blake in the Section 6 championship game. Blake was the 1A champion in 2017.

Following is a look at the other 2A quarterfinal matchups:

 

• Lakeville South (19-9-0) vs. No. 2 Centennial (23-3-1): Lakeville South outlasted Farmington 6-5 in the Section 1 final to qualify for state for the fifth time since 2009. Centennial returns for the first time since 2008 and third time overall. Centennial is 9-1 in its past 10 games, its lone loss in that span a 3-1 setback to Blake in the regular-season finale.

• Eagan (22-5-2) vs. No. 3 Hill-Murray (24-4-0): The top seed in Section 3, Eagan rallied to defeat Eastview 4-3 in the section final to advance to state for the first time since 2013 and ninth time overall. Hill-Murray outscored section opposition 23-0 to win its sixth consecutive section crown. The Pioneers were 2A champions in 2014 and 2015. The Pioneers have surrendered no more than one goal in 20 games.

• No. 5 Eden Prairie (18-9-1) vs. No. 4 Andover (21-6-1): Eden Prairie lost three Lake Conference games to end the regular season, but bounced back to win the Section 2 title. The Eagles won the third-place game in 2A in 2017. Andover is 11-1 in its past dozen games, the only loss a 4-3 overtime setback to Centennial Jan. 30. The Huskies are at state for the third time since 2014.

• Championship semifinals and championship games in both classes will be televised live by Channel 45TV.

• Tickets: Championship session $17 adults, $11 students; Consolation session $12 adults, $8 students.

• Fans: Xcel Energy Center and Ridder Arena will open its gates to fans one hour prior to the first scheduled game of the day.
