Mossy Head, meet North Dakota
Connecting with a meteorologist in North Dakota, the Mossy Head Elementary School fifth-graders use FaceTime, a video app, as a means of learning about weather, climate zones and careers in meteorology.
The MHES Mechanical Mustangs and Mustang Movers teams competed in January at the FIRST LEGO League Robotics competition. They earned the Judges’ Award, with the judges impressed by the teams’ growth since their last competitions in November.

Eglin Elementary School second-grade teacher Amelia Garrett received a $1,000 ACCELerator grant from the National Defense Industrial Association, Gulf Coast Chapter. Garrett encourages science, technology, engineering and math in the classroom.

In late January, the Walton School District held its all-county honor band performance, while the all-county honor chorus performance took place on Feb. 3.

Paxton Middle School’s STEM Club participated in the mid-January FIRST LEGO League competition.
Before the expo and contest, students devised ways to improve water use. The Paxton club focused on Guatemala, with students developing a plan to deliver water to the community by creating a reservoir at high elevation. Pipes would transport the water to various points throughout the community.
They also presented a robotics design about their project.

Northwest Florida State College’s forensics team placed fifth in the state level competition. Team members include Phoenix Price, Rowan Price, Deaton Arthur, Nelly Zavaleta, Alizabeth Turner-Ward and Caleb Heathershaw.
Coach Cecil Scalf was selected as FCSAA 2018 Forensics Coach of the Year by fellow coaches.
