WORTHINGTON -- Kylie Dunning and Whitney Weick combined for four goals to lead Minnesota River to a victory over Worthington in a girls hockey game on Saturday.

Hal Overgaard added a goal as the Bulldogs won 5-0.

“I don’t think the score reflected how we played,” WHS head coach Chad Nickel said. “We skated, we were just slightly out of position. Not hugely, but we didn’t win some of the races the puck and in some cases we did. We put a few shots on goal, we just couldn’t put them home.”

The Trojans were outshot 47-21, with Minnesota River goalie Jordan Keeley stopping each shot she saw. Worthington’s Bailey Kruse made 42 saves.

“They do a good job of putting two players in front of our net and they do a good job of hunkering down,” Nickel said. “Our girls were having a hard time moving them off.”

It took the Bulldogs 40 seconds to score the first goal of the game as Overgaard scored with Zoe Haugen and Emma Doherty-Bohn with the assists.

However, the last 16:20 of the first period was scoreless as the Bulldogs led 1-0 at the first intermission.

Dunning scored twice in the second period with the first assist going to Nicole McCabe and the second assist going to Kendall Wenner. The first came 10 minutes into the period, with the second goal being scored with 44.8 seconds remaining.

Weick scored both her goals in the third period. The first goal was assisted by Doherty-Bohn and Ashley Pudwill and the second was assisted by Dunning and Lucy Kleschult. Weick’s first goal was on a power play 22 seconds into the period. The last goal came with 1:18 remaining in the game.

“Overall, I think the girls played a decent game,” Nickel said. “It’s tough when they can keep slipping in.”

Worthington hosts Windom Area on Thursday in a girl/boy doubleheader.
