For many years, organizers aren’t sure how many, the Winter Ag & Construction Expo at the Jamestown Civic Center has been a two-day event during the middle of the week, according to Lynn Lambrecht, sales manager for i3G Media, formerly Ingstad Family Media.

The expo opens at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, and at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

“It is now a Friday and Saturday event,” Lambrecht said. “We had to shake things up a bit and we are offering quite a few new things.”

Lambrecht said the event still focuses on farmers with the Commercial Pesticide Certification Course, presented from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, one of the event’s highlights. The course is presented by Mike Liane, pesticide program specialist for North Dakota State University Extension Service.

“Farmers know when they need to get their certification done,” Lambrecht said. “It’s nice for them to have an option to do it locally.”

Other farm topics that will draw interest include a presentation on the new dicamba label information by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and dicamba applicator training presented by Dow-Dupont’s Northern Plains District.

There will also be seminars on land values and management, commodity markets, grain storage, weed control and the North Dakota Soybean Processors crushing plant planned for Spiritwood.

Lambrecht said that while those seminars will appeal to the current generation of farmers, there is a lot on the schedule for the next generation.

“Friday we have the Ag and Youth program by the Stutsman County Extension Service,” she said.

“It is a round-robin type event with kids learning from different farm professionals at each station.”

Alicia Harstad, Stutsman County agriculture and natural resources extension agent, said they expect about 200 students including third-graders from Jamestown elementary schools and third- and fourth-graders from Medina and Pingree-Buchanan schools.

Farm families are the focus of Saturday events with air games for children and farm seminars for adults.

“We recognized that a lot of farm families work at jobs off the farm,” Lambrecht said. “The Saturday schedule gives them more freedom to attend.”

Friday at noon, Unison Bank is sponsoring the annual Farmers Appreciation Lunch at no charge. Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m., is the Gackle-Streeter FFA Fundraiser Pancake Breakfast. Tickets for the pancake breakfast are $8 per person or $25 per family at the event.

Lambrecht said both days of the expo will include a full floor of vendor booths offering equipment and services for the agriculture and construction industry.

“We should have a good crowd this year,” she said. “We caught a break from the weather with no blizzards or bone-chilling cold in the forecast.”
