Two women died and three other people were injured after two cars collided Sunday evening on Orange Avenue in Winter Park, near U.S. Highway 17-92, police said.

Winter Park police closed a section of Orange Avenue near 17-92. It will likely stay closed for a few hours, Sgt. Garvin McComie said just before 8:30 p.m. Drivers should avoid the area.

“They’re going to be doing an extensive investigation,” McComie said.

The crash happened about 5:45 p.m. near Westchester Avenue, about a block west of 17-92, McComie said. One driver was going east on Orange Avenue “at a high rate of speed,” McComie said. The other was driving down Westchester Avenue, crossing Orange.

The two women died, and three other occupants of the cars were hospitalized, McComie said.

Police did not immediately release the names of the people involved in the crash.
