A man fell through a 2-inch layer of ice into a small retention pond while ice fishing near Oquirrh Lake in South Jordan on Friday morning.

Fire crews were called out to the ice rescue about 11:21 a.m. at the Daybreak community, near 4500 W. Daybreak Parkway (11239 South), according to a Valley Emergency Communications dispatcher.

Although the water was only about waist-deep, the man was stuck in the pond until some nearby residents lowered a ladder into the water for him to climb out, South Jordan Battalion Chief Clayton Miller said.

Miller said the man was probably in the water for about 5 minutes, and the waders he was wearing protected him from the cold water.

“I think he probably would have suffered some hypothermia had he not had those on, but he was well-prepared,” Miller said. “Other than ice fishing on 2 inches.”

The man was out of the pond by the time rescue crews arrived. Medics evaluated him, and determined he was OK, Miller said.
