At 44 minutes, the Aquia area of Stafford County has the worst average commute time among 67 communities in Northern Virginia, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
Released earlier this month, the survey compiled responses from 2012-2016 for communities across the country on topics related to demographics, employment, homeownership and more.
Only four of the 67 communities reviewed by InsideNoVa had commute times better than Virginia’s average of 28.1 minutes: Fredericksburg, Dulles Town Center, Fort Belvoir and Herndon.
Among Prince William communities, Brentsville had the longest average commute at 41.2 minutes. Residents in the Potomac Mills area reported the shortest average commute at 32.8 minutes.

Average commute times are likely somewhat correlated with general civic engagement. Where the average employed resident is spending an extra 30 minutes commuting every workday (i.e., 15 more minutes each way), the average employed resident typically has that much less free time for community involvement. Thus, both physical proximity and faster access to good-paying jobs are important community assets.
A more meaningful measure, however, might be average commute time via auto, since non-auto commuting, while typically slower, can use commuting time more productively to read, work, or exercise.
This doesn't make a lot of sense since you don't know where they are commuting to.
