2 students injured when school bus crashes into tree in Miramar

Miramar Fire-Rescue says students suffered minor injuries

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Two students were injured when a school bus crashed into a tree in Miramar.

A representative from the Miramar Fire-Rescue Department said the students suffered minor injuries in the crash on Southwest 163rd Avenue.

Local 10 News reporter Sanela Sabovic spoke with a woman who ran outside to help after she heard the crash. She said the bus driver appeared dazed.

"She didn't say what happened," Kimberly Russo said. "She just knew that she crashed and didn't know why."

Russo, who was in town for her nephew's graduation, took the driver and all 11 students inside her sister's home to stay warm and make sure they were OK.

"They were a little shaken up, but thank goodness they were all OK," Russo said.

None of the students were taken to a hospital, but a 7-year-old boy who was on the bus with his father at the time hurt his knee.

"This could've been worse," one parent, Tinu Mathew said.

The school bus had "City of Pembroke Pines Charter School" written on its side.

The city manager said the cause of the crash is unclear and authorities are not sure whether the driver fell asleep, had a medical episode or whether something was mechanically wrong with the bus.

The driver was taken to a hospital after the crash.
