DERBY — Bad Sons Brewery is doing really good things for the Valley.

The brewery, located at 251 Roosevelt Drive, opened in July in the former 113-year old Manger Die Casting Co. building. Shelton brothers Bill and Mark DaSilva renovated the old factory and gave it a fitting name, using the first letter of each of the lower Naugatuck Valley towns; Beacon Falls, Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Oxford, Naugatuck and Seymour.

In addition to the varieties of craft beer on tap, the brothers have come up with a new initiative to give back to Valley nonprofits. Dubbed the “Charity Tap Line,” it will feature Bad Sons donating proceeds from beer sales to different Valley organizations each month.

The DaSilva brothers, along with their Bad Sons partners John Walsh, Dan DiSorbo and owner Mike Student, said since they all boast local ties to the Valley, they thought it was only fitting to do their part and pay homage to their hometowns.

“We are honored and proud to be giving back to the Valley where all of us here at Bad Sons grew up,” said Student.

Student and the rest of the crew believe the “Bad Sons doing good things” charity tap line would be “a great conversation piece for all the guests who visit their taproom, spreading the good word while raising money for local charities is a win/win” for everyone.

The first recipient of Bad Sons’ generosity is Valley United Way, which recently received a check for $1,627 from the brewery. VUW officials said having Bad Sons support not only the VUW them but other local businesses, as well, sends a strong message about supporting positive economic and community growth by partnering with other local businesses, and is an important part of their business model.

“The Bad Sons partners are a great group of men with big hearts,” said VUW President Sharon Gibson Ellis. “We are very excited to be the first of many charities that will benefit from their generosity.”

Gibson Ellis said the money will help toward VUW’s ongoing “food security work” in the Valley, which helps put food on the tables of Valley residents in need.

Student was thrilled to donate to VUW as the first recipient of the charity tap line.

“We are very appreciative for all the Valley United Way does for our community and we look forward to continuing to support their efforts in the years to come,” Student said.

Bad Sons, for each beer purchased off the charity tap line, will donate $1 to the featured nonprofit organization.

Next month’s charity campaign will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, officials said.
