HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Two people were killed when the vehicle they were riding in crashed Wednesday afternoon in Orange County near Hillsborough, authorities said.

Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a 2005 Saturn Vue driven by Corena M. Johnson, 19, of Mebane, was traveling north on Interstate 85 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle traveled off the roadway and collided with multiple trees.

Johnson and passenger Kelleigh E. Shropshire, 19, of Haw River, were pronounced dead at the scene. Shropshire wasn't wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Troopers said speed was the primary cause of the crash.

Officials closed one lane of I-85 while they investigated the incident.
