Man seriously injured in collision with school bus in Iosco County

BALDWIN TWP, MI -- An Oscoda man has suffered serious injuries in a collision with a school bus in Iosco County.

The incident happened at 6:47 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, at the intersection of US-23 and Aulerich Road in Baldwin Township. A Tawas Area Schools District bus containing four students attempted to turn left onto US-23 when it collided with a southbound silver Ford pickup truck driven by 28-year-old Christopher Hilyard.

Hilyard's truck's lights were not on and the bus driver did not see him, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Pete McNamara.

Neither the bus driver nor the students aboard the bus were injured. Emergency responders needed to use the Jaws of Life to extract Hilyard from his badly crumpled truck.

Hilyard was then transported from the scene via helicopter to an area hospital, McNamara said. He is in serious but stable condition as of 11:30 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
