Flash flood warning issued for portions of three SE Michigan counties

A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service Monday evening for portions of three southeast Michigan counties.

The flash flood warning is in effect until 9:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28 for southeastern Oakland County, north-central Wayne County, and southwestern Macomb County.

Between two to three inches of rain has fallen in some locations, per the warning, with one to two additional inches possible by 8 p.m. that "will bring the potential for flash flooding, particularly near poor drainage areas."

Flooding has closed Eastbound I-696 at Evergreen Road and westbound I-696 at Southfield Road in Southfield, according to the Michigan State Police Metro Detroit Twitter page.

"Avoid the area," reads one tweet. "Also Telegraph ramp to EB and M10 ramp to EB 696."

Some areas to be potentially impacted by the flash flooding include Royal Oak, Warren, Livonia, Troy, Southfield, Taylor, Pontiac, Romulus, Detroit, Sterling Heights, Dearborn, Royal Oak, Wyandotte, Birmingham, Rochester, Westland, Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, Dearborn Heights and Lincoln Park.

Police have asked motorists not to drive on shoulders or drive the wrong way amid the flooding.
