FHP: Two Collier teens hurt when car crashes into palm tree after driver nodded off

Collier County Sheriff's Office deputies on scene of the crash in Naples.

Two Collier County teenagers were injured seriously Wednesday when a car crashed  into a palm tree after the driver fell asleep, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Jack Simpson, 18, was driving a 2013 Lexus north in the left lane on Livingston Road near Pine Ridge Road at 6:39 a.m. when he fell asleep, the Highway Patrol stated. The car veered onto the median, struck a sabal palm tree and stopped, FHP reported.

Simpson was taken to NCH North Naples Hospital, and his passenger, Victor Marrero, 18, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, FHP said.

Simpson faces a charge of failure to drive within a single lane, the report states.

Both teenagers recently graduated from Barron Collier High School.

Simpson was a captain on the school's varsity wrestling team, and Marrero was a captain on the varsity football team, according to the school's yearbook.
