It's primary Election Day in Pennsylvania.
Polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and as races go, this year's primary is a mixed bag.
It's a snoozer for Northampton County elected offices and the city of Bethlehem, where none of the races are contested. That will change in the fall, at least at the county level, when registered voters aren't restricted to voting only for the candidates affiliated with their party or ticket.
For now in Bethlehem, there are no Republicans on the ballot, giving incumbents such as Mayor Bob Donchez and several city council members an easy path to re-election.
In Easton, two incumbent council members face primary challenges today. Jim Edinger is up against challenger Terrence Miller on the Democratic ticket in District 2; and longtime Democratic Councilwoman Sandra Vulcano has competition from Taiba Sultana in District 3.
The Easton Area School Board also has some action, with two candidates cross-filed and seeking nominations in Region 1 -- Brian Synder and Bill Whitman -- and three candidates cross-filed in Region 3. They are Meg Sayago, George M. Chando and Jason L. Simms.
In communities countywide, most races are uncontested but there are some hotspots. The ballots are crowded for East Allen Township supervisor, Moore Township supervisor and Upper Mount Bethel Township supervisor.
So, too, are the races for district judge in the Bethlehem, Hellertown and Slate Belt areas.
A couple of other notables: Palmer Township supervisor Ann Marie Panella is being challenged on the Democratic ticket for a six-year term by Charles "Zeke" Bellis; and longtime Freemansburg Mayor Gerald Yob, a Democrat, is battling former councilman Donald Lasso for their party's nomination to run in the general election.
In Lehigh County, there's a crowd on the ballot in Allentown, where incumbent Mayor Ed Pawlowski's administration is under the cloud of a federal pay-to-play investigation. That hasn't stopped Pawlowski from seeking the Democratic nomination for a fourth term, with six other Democrats looking to unseat him. They are Siobhan "Sam" Bennett, David Jones, Ray O'Connell, Joshua Siegel, Charlie Thiel and Nathan Woodring. Two Republicans are looking to get their party's nomination to be on the general election ballot: Luiz Garcia and Nat Hyman. Several Democrats also are running for city council.
Lehigh County Executive Tom Muller, a Democrat, isn't running for re-election. Two Republicans will square off today -- Glen Eckhart and Brad Osborne -- with Philips Armstrong uncontested on the Democratic ticket.
