A British tourist has been left blind after drinking a cocktail suspected of being laced with cheap alcohol while on holiday on a Greek island.

Hannah Powell, 20, collapsed with kidney failure after partying with friends in the Laganas resort town on the island of Zakynthos.

Ms Powell remains in intensive care at Patra hospital seven days after falling seriously ill, Daily Mail reports.

After an evening in the bars drinking cocktails, she went to bed, slept 48 hours and woke up unable to see.

Doctors do not yet know if her kidneys or eyesight will return to normal.

Greek press have claimed Ms Powell has suffered methanol poisoning from cheap alcohol added to her drinks.

While methanol poisoning could have been the catalyst for her condition, doctors do not believe it could be responsible for the full extent of her condition.

Dr Dimitris Goumenos, head of the Kidney Clinic at the University Hospital, Patra said: "When she came in Hannah was on the verge of being blind.

"The problem was much more serious than just a plain methanol poisoning.

"Her parents wanted to take her home to Britain this weekend, but I would not be happy for her to travel on a plane until much later in the week, depending on her condition."
