Black female police chief for Delco town

Darby Township will swear in one of Pennsylvania's first black female police chiefs next week, the township said Friday. Regina Price, a 30-year police veteran from Florida, also will be Delaware County's first female police chief, said Richard Womack, the township's police commissioner.

Darby Township will swear in one of the state's first black female police chief next week, the township said Friday.

Regina Price, a 30-year police veteran from Florida, also will be Delaware County's first female police chief, said Richard Womack, the township's police commissioner.

"It's really going to be a distinction," said Womack, who is also vice president of the Darby Township commissioners. "I'm glad to see the commissioners looked past race and looked past gender to get the best qualified candidate to run our department."

Price, a major in the Riviera Beach Police Department, was one of more than 10 candidates who applied to replace Leonard McDevitt Jr., who recently retired, Womack said. She heard about the position from a friend from Philadelphia, he said.

Price impressed township officials with her credentials and her ideas, especially for training programs for officers and ways of interacting with religious leaders and youth to build better relationships between the police and the community, Womack said.

"We just look forward to working with Regina, and we hope everyone will be supportive of her and embrace the decision, and hopefully we can move forward and all work together," Womack said.

Price is to be sworn in Wednesday morning at the Darby Township School.

Wilkinsburg, a town in western Pennsylvania, also has a black female police chief.
