Traverse City returns to top spot in Division 1

For the second time in three years, Traverse City West claimed the Division 1 girls golf state championship, easily beating second-place Brighton and third-place Saline.

West, which won the title in 2015, shot a 311 on the first day and 315 on the second to finish with a 626 total.

West was led by Anika Dy with a two-day total of 141, which led all golfers. Sister Anci Dy followed with a 154, good for sixth overall, while Megan Jenkinson was ninth overall with a 156. Maddy McCall (178) and Jillian Ellul (183) rounded out the Traverse City West scoring.

Brighton second, Saline third in Division 1 standings

Saline made a strong second-day charge with a 323, but Brighton had just enough to fend off Saline for the runner-up spot. Brighton finished with a two-day total of 648, with Saline third with a 648.

Anika Dy runs away with Division 1 title

Traverse City West junior Anika Dy claimed her second straight Division 1 state championship Saturday at The Meadows with a two-day total of 141, with Rochester's Savannah Haque second with a 149.

Dy, who sister Anci Dy finished sixth with a 154, started the tournament with a 69 on the first day before shooting a 72 Saturday for the title.

Rochester's Savannah Haque holds on for runner-up finish

After Anika Dy's 141, Savannah Haque of Rochester finished second with a 149, but had to fend off Saline's Catherine Loftus and Bloomfield Hills' Mikaela Schulz on the second day. Haque, who shot a 72 on the first day and 77 on the second, watched Loftus and Schulz close the gap, with Loftus shooting a 75 and Schulz a 74 on the second day.

Other top finishers included Lapeer's Brooke Gibbons (153), Traverse City West's Anci Dy (154), Utica Eisenhower's Ariel Chang (154), Brighton's Annie Pietila (155), Traverse City West's Megan Jenkinson (156) and Ann Arbor Pioneer's Amaya Melendez (156).

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern wins first girls golf state title since 1982

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern has waited since 1982 to claim the girls golf state title, claiming the Division 2 state title Saturday at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek. Northern shot a two-day total of 656, 12 strokes ahead of second-place Bloomfield Hills Marian.

Freshman Lilia Henkel led Northern with a 156, which was seventh overall. Junior Kay Zubkus finished with a 160 for 10th overall.

Other scorers for Northern were senior Maddie Goodrich (168) and senior Chloe Johnson (172). Anna Fay shot a 93 on the first day, with Gabby Mas shooting a 95 on Day Two.

Marian edges Muskegon Reeths Puffer to finish second

Bloomfield Hills Marian shot a 326 Saturday to jump past Muskegon Reeths-Puffer into second place in the Division 2 girls golf state finals. Marian shot a 342 on the first day, but carded a 326 on the second day for 668 to edge Reeths-Puffer, which shot a 330 Saturday for a two-day total of 669.

Other finishers were defending champion Midland Dow (671), South Lyon (673), Birmingham Seaholm (682), South Lyon East (690), St. Joseph (707), Okemos (717), Fenton (719), St. Johns (733), Battle Creek Lakeview (737), Port Huron Northern (754), Coldwater (764), Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (769), Petoskey (772), Traverse City Central (793) and Grosse Pointe North (800).

Freshman Shannon Kennedy birdies way to Division 2 title

Bloomfield Hills Marian freshman Shannon Kennedy took over the Division 2 girls golf meet Saturday with five birdies on her way to a 70 and two-day total of 146. Midland Dow senior Alexis Carras, who finished second to her sister Stephanie Carras in 2016, finished second with a 149.

Macomb Lutheran North 'repeats' in Division 3

Macomb Lutheran North repeated as state champ, although North won in Division 4 in 2016 before moving up to Division 3. After shooting a 356 on the first day, North finished with a 341 Saturday for a 697 total, three shots ahead of second-place Grand Rapids South Christian.

Serena Nguyen led North with a 152, good for second overall. Kaity Rittner followed with a 163, which was fifth overall. Grace Farquhar shot a 173, followed by Sarah Hohensee with a 218 and Julia Zauel with a 224.

Grand Rapids Christian finishes strong to take second place

Junior Natale Samdal shot a 158 to lead Grand Rapids South Christian to a 700, finishing second in the state in Division 3. South Christian shot a 357 on the first day, lowering it to 343 on Saturday.

Notre Dame Prep's Danielle Staskowski repeats as Division 3 champ

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep junior Danielle Staskowski earned back-to-back Division 3 state titles, shooting a 144 for a second-consecutive title.

Staskowski, who won in a playoff as a sophomore, finished eight strokes ahead of second-place Serena Nguyen of Macomb Lutheran North. Staskowski shot back-to-back 72s to take the title.

Natalie Samdal, Carmen Chan tie for third in Division 3

Macomb Lutheran North senior Serena Nguyen took second, eight shots behind medalist Danielle Staskowski.  Carman Chan of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood and Natalie Samdal of Grand Rapids South Christian tied for third with 158s.

Other top finishers included Macomb Lutheran North's Kaity Rittner (163), Spring Lake's Hannah Klein (165), St. Clair's Kara Likins (165), Cranbrook-Kingswood's Kate Cao (166), Flint Powers' Julie Brochu (166) and Freeland's Olivia Pumford (167).

Harbor Springs wins first Division 4 state title

Harbor Springs came from 12 strokes back after the first day to claim its first girls golf state title, shooting a 680 at Forest Akers East at Michigan State University.

The Rams trailed Almont by 12 strokes after the first day, but shot a season-low 328 on the second day to run away with the title, beating second-place Jackson Lumen Christi by 11 strokes.

Madi Bezilla led the Rams with a 163, third overall. Calli O'Neill and Jacque O'Neill each shot 172s, with Evie Garver shooting 173. Jackie LaFaire was the fifth Harbor Beach golfer with a 193.

Lumen Christi rallies to finish in second place

Jackson Lumen Christi shot a 350 Saturday to jump past Almont and finish as the Division 4 runner-up with a 691 total. Almont, which led after one day with a 340, finished third with a 699.

Alissa Fish pulls away on second day to win Division 4 medalist honors

Alissa Fish finished Friday in a four-way tie for first, but shot an 80 on Saturday to earn medalist honors with a 159.

The Brooklyn Columbia Central junior was tied for first with a 79 after Friday's first round at Forest Akers East.

Almont's Grace Zimmerman earns runner-up honors

Almont's Grace Zimmerman shot an 82 on Saturday for a 161, holding off three rivals who tied one stroke behind Zimmeran with 163s. Jackson Lumen Christi's Geraldine Berkemeier, Harbor Springs' Madi Bezilla and Jackson Lumen Christi's Hillary Ziemba finished with 163s.

Other top finishers included Manistee's Alice Fink-Jensen (164), Shepherd's Morgan Yates (164), Livonia Ladywood's Gabriella Scopone (165), North Muskegon's Abby Grevel and Kalamazoo Hackett's Emily Stull (166).
