Will you have a kitty with that coffee? Hawaii's first cat cafe is coming soon
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Cat cafes have been taking off nationally, and there's now one slated for Oahu.
The Hawaii Cat Cafe is the brainchild of Cindy Washburn, who is partnering with the Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to launch the project.
The idea behind the cafe is simple: Come in, grab a drink and a scone, and enjoy it with a cuddly cat (or two).
If you fall in love with a kitty, you can adopt it.
"Our hope is that by creating the space, we will reduce the amount of cats that are abandoned and contributing to the feral cat population," Washburn said.
The cafe is on track to open in late June and organizers are considering different sites in Honolulu, Hawaii Kai, and Kailua.
"We've been scoping out a few different places, but are waiting to sign a lease until after the Kickstarter has some backing," Washburn said.
The cafe will open regardless of donations, according to Washburn, but people's generosity will make a difference in what the cafe will offer.
"We intend on spoiling these kitties rotten, and we have a few ideas on how we're going to do it," Washburn said.
She wants the cat room to be a paradise for both the animals and visitors. Plans are for the cafe to be decked out with comfy furniture and all kinds of spots for the cats to hang out and play.
Humans will be accommodated, too. Washburn envisions the cafe as a great place to grab a cup of coffee or tea, a snack, even study or work, and hopefully find a furry new addition to your family.
There will be a small admission fee to spend time in the cat room. The fee will help cover the cost of litter, food, toys, and other needs for the cats.
