CARLSBAD

CHS Lancer Dancers offer dance camp

Elementary and middle schoolers who love to dance, or hope to try out for dance or cheer squads, are invited to learn new skills at the Junior Lancer Dancer summer camp, from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 15-18 at Carlsbad High School by the champion CHS Varsity Dance Team. Scholarships are available, or attend the camp for a donation of $125. Camps are tailored for beginner, intermediate and advanced dancers ages 5 to 14. Local students graduate

Claudia A. Moreno of Escondido graduated from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., with a bachelor’s degree in communication.

Darshana Benhur of Carlsbad graduated from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., with a Master of Science degree in business intelligence and analytics.

Leah Reitmayer of Vista graduated from Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics.

Danielle Hendricks of Oceanside earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.

Ryan Lesley of Poway graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis with degrees in marketing and economics.

Area students honored

These students were named to the spring 2017 Dean’s List or Honor Roll: Karisa Hughen of Vista, Fairfield University, Fairfield, Conn.; Presley Wiggins of Poway, Washburn University, Topeka, Kan.; Megan Cavataio of Escondido, Whitworth University, Spokane, Wash.; Tracy Gates of Escondido, Morningside College, Sioux Falls, Iowa. Gates also received the Stephen Jay Gould Award for excellence in biology and chemistry and the humanities.

At St. Anselm’s College in North Manchester, N.H., Danielle Isbell of Poway was inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi National Society for Leadership & Success, and Megan Miller of Poway was inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, Omicron Rho Chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

Free rugs for classrooms

New associate superintendent at OUSD

Shannon Soto is the new associate superintendent of business services for the Oceanside Unified School District. Soto most recently served as director of fiscal services at the Laguna Beach School District. At OUSD, Soto will oversee the district’s bond construction, fiscal services, maintenance and operations, nutrition services, purchasing and transportation. Soto holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Cal State Long Beach, a Master of Science in educational administration from Alliant University, and a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California. She replaces Christopher Wright, who is taking a position at the Carlsbad Unified School District.

District awards honorary diplomas

The Oceanside Unified School District recently awarded honorary diplomas to Ruth Ramirez, Nayelli Maldonado and Basilio Bernard. The program was created for students who attended one of the OUSD high schools, but who were unable to graduate for various reasons. These students finished their adult high school diploma coursework at MiraCosta College and became eligible for an honorary diploma from the OUSD high school of their choice.

Scholars to hold public showcase

Students in Cal State San Marcos’ Summer Scholars Program will present their work during the Summer Scholars Showcase from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday in the campus’ University Student Union Ballroom. The free event is hosted by CSUSM’s College of Science and Mathematics. Free parking is available in the university parking structure. The Summer Scholars Program works with faculty mentors to help STEM students gain experience in interdisciplinary projects and learn to apply new techniques and analytical methods.Contact Linda Collins at lcollins@csusm.edu or (760) 750-7204.

Palomar watercolor class changes days

Watercolor Painting 1 & 2 (Art 235/236) has been moved from Saturdays to Mondays and Wednesdays in the fall 2017 lineup of classes at Palomar College. Artist Ken Joudrey continues as the instructor. The course runs from 2:30 to 5:35 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Enrollment is encouraged by Saturday. Enroll at palomar.edu/pages/enrollmentservices/apply-now. Course numbers are 73694/5 and 73696/7.

SMUSD names director of secondary education

Tiffany Campbell, the principal of San Marcos High School, has been named director of secondary education for the San Marcos Unified School District, a position previously held by the district’s new superintendent, Melissa Hunt. Campbell earned her Master of Science degree in educational leadership from National University, and is working on a doctorate in education from UC San Diego. She has more than 20 years of teaching and administrative experience in middle and high schools, and began in the district as an assistant principal for San Marcos High School in 2005. She became the principal of San Marcos Middle School, then of San Marcos High.

Club gives $12K in scholarships

The Woman’s Club of Vista recently awarded $12,000 total in scholarships to students of six Vista high schools. They are: Erica Resendiz of Murray High; Hannah Silos, valedictorian at Guajome Park Academy; Ruben (Derek) Hernandez, Guajome Park Academy; Alyssa Graff, Mission Vista High School; Jennifer Spears, Mission Vista High School; Jenna Steffan, North County Trade Tech; Maggie Ross, Rancho Buena Vista High; Patrick Fernandez, Rancho Buena Vista High; Sam Van Gundy, Vista High School; and Carl Hughes, Vista High School.
