Troopers: Driver who topped 120 mph on Glenn stopped near Wasilla

The man in a white 2006 Audi was driving faster than 120 mph near the Knik River bridge on the Glenn Highway early Thursday morning, Alaska State Troopers say.

He got to Wasilla before troopers say they stopped him with spike strips and took him into custody on a highway overpass.

An Anchorage Police Department supervisor reported a reckless driver going faster than 120 mph to dispatchers just before 2:30 a.m., according to an online dispatch posted Thursday. Troopers spotted the Audi near the Knik River and tried unsuccessfully to stop it.

The car kept going on the Parks Highway toward Wasilla, troopers say. More troopers waited at the Glenn Parks Interchange and Trunk Road and deployed spike strips that deflated one of the Audi's tires as well as those of another driver not involved in the pursuit.

Troopers caught the car when it stopped atop the Seward Meridian overpass near Walmart, where the driver got out and climbed halfway over the bridge rail and threatened to jump, troopers say. They negotiated with him for nearly 20 minutes until a troopers approached from behind and grabbed him.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for involuntary commitment, according to the dispatch. Charges of failing to stop at the direction of a peace officer will be forwarded to the Palmer District Attorney for review.
