EIGHTEEN-year-old point guard Stanton Rose Jr will become the youngest player to captain Guyana at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championship, after he was named as the leader for the side selected by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) yesterday.

Rose, who led Guyana to a first-time series win (2–1) against Barbados two weeks ago in their warm-up for the CBC Championship, is hoping to turn the tide for the Guyanese, whose highest placing in the regional basketball showpiece was second place, achieved in 1994 (Georgetown).

The Kwakwani native, Rose, will lead US-based Anthony Moe, Kevon Wiggins and Denzel Devonish, along with Felix Hamilton (Antigua), Ray Victor (BVI), Olan Glasgow (Royals), Harold Adams (Royals), Travis Burnett (Kobras), Shaine Webster (Colts), Timothy Thompson (Colts) and Travis Belgrave (Eagles) at the June 24-30 in Paramaribo.

Junior Hercules is the side’s head coach, while Dennis Clarke is his assistant and GABF president Nigel Hinds will serve as the manager.

The players will depart for Suriname on June 22 and play their first game two days later against Grenada at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadium.

At the CBC tournament in Suriname, the Guyanese Men are in Group A, with hosts and rivals Suriname, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines, while Group B comprises Barbados, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Haiti and Montserrat.
