HAINES CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was charged with driving under the influence after Polk County deputies said he hit a 6-year-old who was getting off a school bus in Haines City on Wednesday.

Deputies said they were called to the intersection of Highway 17-92 and Chanler Drive around 4:15 p.m. for a crash.

The sheriff’s office said 67-year-old Robert Reedy was driving a white Jeep and hit a 6-year-old as the child was getting off a school bus. The 6-year-old was not seriously hurt.

Investigators said they learned Reedy tried to pass a car while passing the school bus.

Deputies said Reedy had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. The sheriff’s office said Reedy refused to take a field sobriety test.

Deputies said they took Reedy into custody and charged him with driving under the influence. They said he had a breath alcohol content of 0.15, which is almost double the legal limit in Florida.
