Ministry of Education pushing to ensure all schools in Belize have internet access

Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2023. 9:21 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Education Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca said today that his ministry is working on several initiatives to bring internet access to every school in Belize.

During his address at today’s budget debate in Belmopan, Fonseca explained that the Ministry of Education Culture, Science, and Technology (MOECST) has built upon and expanded an older program by the previous administration to increase internet access to schools as a part of the ministry’s goal to ensure that education is technology-centered.

“I can report to you that as of the beginning of March 2023, more than 128 schools have already been successfully connected to the internet under this government,” Fonseca said. “More schools are connected every day. By the end of April 2023, our target goal of 197 schools countrywide will be reached.”

He noted that while the old program saw students given access to 25 MB of data to be used on their campuses; however, the updated program will give more than 66,000 students access to devices and 500 MB of data installed across their campuses as a wifi managed solution with 24-hour support and maintenance.

He noted that the Government of Belize is also partnering with a company called Giga, to ensure schools have internet access. Fonseca also said that the ministry will be working with partners to ensure that schools in remote areas without electricity are hooked up to some form of power source so they too can receive internet access.
