Three men were today charged with the murder of Joel and Isaiah Henry, the two cousins who were found murdered at Cotton Tree Backdam, West Coast Berbice last September.
Vinod Gopaul, 30, of Yakusari North Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, and Anil Sancharra, called “Dan Pole” and “Rasta,” 34, of D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh in a Georgetown Court, where they were jointly charged with the murder of the cousins.
They were not required to plead to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison.
A third man, Akash Singh, called “Monkey,” 20, of Zeelugt Squatting Area, East Bank Essequibo, was charged separately with the murders and he was also remanded to prison.
Singh is alleged to have implicated his two co-accused after being arrested and based on the evidence in possession of the police the Director of Public Prosecutions has advised that the men be charged over the murders.
The discovery of the bodies of Joel, 18, and Isaiah, 16, in the Cotton Tree backlands, where they had gone to pick coconuts, set off protests on the West Coast of Berbice.
Autopsies performed on the bodies of the teenagers showed that they both died from haemorrhage and shock due to multiple wounds.
A number of persons, including the owner of a coconut estate and some individuals who allegedly saw the Henrys on September 4th, one day before their bodies were discovered, were arrested and questioned in relation to the crime.
However, they were subsequently released without being charged.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has said that the police are pursuing a number of other individuals.
Their next hearing for the three men is slated for February 2nd, 2021, at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.
