Belize government to lift curfew on Wednesday

June 30, 2020

BELMOPAN, Belize, Jun 30, CMC – The Belize government says it will lift the curfew imposed as part of the efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday.

The curfew has been in place since the state of emergency (SOE) was implemented three months ago and Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, said the government in consultation with the National Oversight Committee, has been relaxing the SOE measures.

Peyrefitte said while the curfew will be lifted, members of the public who do not have any legitimate purpose to be outside, can be arrested by the police.

“I want to make this very, very clear there will be no more curfew but under the law even before COVID-10 and even up to now you must be moving with a purpose. So you can’t be wandering about the place aimlessly at one in the morning simply because there is no curfew,” the Attorney General said.

The attorney general said that while the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) will be reopened in August, land borders with Mexico and Guatemala will remain closed for the foreseeable future, especially since COVID-19 cases in both countries have been drastically increasing.

Peyrefitte also reminded that social distancing is to be adhered to and will be enforced, even though there will be some exceptions to this rule .

Peyrefitte said the limit of a 100 persons at an event will also be lifted when the SOE expires on Tuesday. Peyrefitte stressed that in some instances where social distancing is not enforced, face masks need to be worn.
