3 killed, 10 injured in raucous Honduran soccer riot

Three people were killed and at least 10 others injured — including several players — in a raucous soccer riot involving two rival clubs in the Honduran capital.

One of the injured was a boy, while three adults hurt in the melee Saturday were listed in critical condition at a local hospital, the Independent reported Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said seven people were shot and stabbed.

The fighting broke out before a game between Motagua and Olimpia — arch-rivals in the Honduran professional soccer league — when Motagua’s bus was pelted with rocks outside the national stadium in Tegucigalpa.

Montagua blamed the Olimpia fan club Ultra Fiel on social media.

Motagua club officials posted photos of the damaged bus on Twitter after the incident and said in Spanish that the team would not show up for the game because of several players had been injured by shattered glass during the attack on their bus.

Motagua also posted photos of the injured players on Twitter and identified them as Emilio Izaguirre, Roberto Moreira and Jonathan Rougier.

The Honduran Ministry of Security blamed “hooligans wearing jerseys of the opposing team” for the attack on the bus.
