Wednesday night was an exciting showdown. New Mexico United took on Major League Soccer Football Club Dallas in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and fans were excited. The team won 2-1, and they are one of two United Soccer League teams left in the tournament. New Mexico United recently beat the Colorado Rapids, and they've added a second MLS win to their resume.
It was wall-to-wall excitement from kickoff till the last play of the match. It was New Mexico United's 4th cup game and the second time they've faced an MLS team.
"Seeing all of this is like a dream come true. Wanting to have a team for so long in the state and then having it and seeing what has been the outcome, it's phenomenal," said New Mexico United supporter Carlos "Sombrero Man" Denorio.
The teams supporter group, the Curse, hosted a watch party at Starr Brothers Brewing Company so fans young and old didn't miss a goal.
"When they score goals!" said Vinny, one of New Mexico Uniteds' youngest supporters, when asked what his favorite part of the game was.
Starr Brothers wasn't the only place where people watched. Members of the Curse and other supporters filled a bus and went to the game in Dallas, TX.
"Every game you go to, you're sold. You can't help but love this team," said Yvonne Reneau, another New Mexico United supporter.
The team beat the second MLS team they've ever faced, so that means they will face a third MLS team, Minnesota United. They just beat last year's tournament champions.
"I believe this is the squad and this is the state to do it, for sure," Denorio said.
The team's time in the tournament isn't over, and neither is its regular season. New Mexico United's next regular season game is Saturday against LA Galaxy II in California.
