FARGO — Conditions creating high fire danger are expected across North Dakota and western Minnesota beginning Thursday afternoon, April 25, and lasting into the evening.

Dry air, dry vegetation and northwesterly winds with gusts up to 45 mph are factoring into a red flag warning that's in effect in the area from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, according to a National Weather Service report.

A red flag warning is issued when grasses and trees are critically dry, so dry that any fire that starts can grow out of control.

Wildfires can be started by cigarettes, sparks from sharpening tools, hot mufflers of cars or all-terrain vehicles parked in the grass, the weather service said.
