A new micropub has opened its doors at the Spanish City Dome in Whitley Bay.

The Split Chimp is the latest addition to the seafront building, which opened to the public last summer following a major restoration project.

The Grade II-listed Dome has seafood restaurants, a tea room, champagne bar, and waffle and pancake house as well as space for weddings and conferences.

Now the new micropub is offering visitors a range of cask ales, keg beers, wines, gins and spirits.

Owner Mark Hall said: "The opening went really well and we are getting great feedback so far.

"People seem to be liking the quirkiness and the atmosphere of the place.

"In the summer, with outside space and picnic benches, we are hoping that we'll add a real ambiance to Spanish City."

North Tyneside has become home to a number of micropubs over the last two years.

Whitley Bay town centre has the Dog and Rabbit and The Storm Cellar, while Monkseaton is home to the newly-opened Front Street Tap House and the Left Luggage Room.

Mr Hall says he is pleased to add another venue to the circuit.

"Hopefully we will complement the other small boozers that are in Whitley Bay," he added. "And hopefully we can all deliver a real ale trail for discerning drinkers who love cask ale."

When the Dome opened in July, around 16,000 people walked through its doors over the first weekend and were able to see the extensive renovation.

The scheme, led by North Tyneside Council, included the addition of two new extensions, kitchens and toilets, and the restoration of original features. The rotunda was also given a major revamp.
